The Alchemy of Scribes

Be sure to check out my new book, Conquer Public Speaking Fear; Master Speech Writing. This book shows that effective public speaking lies not just in the words you choose, but in the passion and authenticity you bring to your delivery. Find the book on Amazon.

My journey began in college, taking writing courses, sitting in quiet libraries researching the craft, and on a writing retreat aboard a cruise ship, heading for Alaska. My quest evolved into a mission to make English both accessible and enchanting for others.

Hi! I’m Margaret. I consider myself a scribe—someone you might spot at Starbucks with my laptop open, shaping stories between sips of coffee. I’ve studied fiction, nonfiction, and screenwriting on a cruise ship, in college, on the Universal Studios lot, and at writing retreats in Palm Springs, Hawaii, and beyond.

In the quiet alcove near the inkwell, I attempt to transform leaden thoughts into golden narratives. As a practitioner of alchemy, I intend to guide you through the structured chaos of creative expression.

My teaching philosophy is that writing should be one step up from play, whether we are dissecting complex essays, building a world for our characters to live in, or crafting short stories. My goal is to create a space where grammar feels like a tool for magic rather than a set of rigid rules. I want you to feel empowered to share your writings with the world or just become comfortable with the knowledge gained at this site if your end game isn't to become a scribe.

ALCHEMY

In a historical sense, alchemy was known as the discipline of combining chemistry, philosophy, and mysticism to transform base metals—like lead—into gold, create the elixir of immortality, and find the philosopher's stone. Since I know little of chemistry and mysticism, I use the word alchemy in its broader sense. Others have done the same. Farmers sow seeds in fertile ground, and in due time there is a harvest. A builder uses raw materials—wood, concrete, and so on—to build homes and other structures. Needless to say, we all use alchemy. Alchemy transforms raw ideas into written work.

Example: "Through the alchemy of revision, Lily's disorganized first draft became a prize-winning short story.”

SCRIBE

A scribe is a person whose job is to write things down, especially by hand—like copying texts, recording information, or writing for someone else who dictates. Historically, scribes preserved stories, laws, and knowledge by carefully writing them out. In some ancient cultures, especially in Mesopotamia, scribes wrote on wet clay tablets using a pointed tool called a stylus. After making wedge-shaped marks in the clay, they let the tablets dry.

Example: With his freshly-sharpened pencil, the scribe readied himself, listening for the words he was to write.
